CoordiKids Byte: Eye Control
Overview
CoordiKids Byte: Eye Control is an evidence-based, online program of video-recorded exercises designed for children aged 4–12 to strengthen eye-tracking and focusing abilities. Featuring seven targeted exercises, this course enhances the eye muscle control needed for tasks such as following moving objects, maintaining focus during conversations, or reading smoothly.
It is particularly effective for improving eye-hand coordination, succeeding in tasks such as reading, writing, and playing board games, and mastering precision activities like lacing or using scissors.
Parental involvement is recommended to support skill development and engagement.
Program Structure
The Eye Control program employs a structured, progressive approach to foster neuroplasticity and skill mastery:
- Exercise Progression: Begin with the first exercise and continue until the child demonstrates a smooth, confident performance before advancing to the next one.
- Daily Practice: Perform one exercise daily for five consecutive days.
- Rest Period: Follow with a two-day rest period to support neural consolidation.
- Repetition: Repeat the same exercise for an additional five days to reinforce visual processing pathways.
Optional Engagement Activities
To enhance engagement and competence, you’ll find optional games to add to the course, such as flashlight tracking and object tracing, among others.
Objectives and Benefits
These exercises strengthen eye muscles through rhythmic movements, body midline crossing, and brain-bridging repetition. Key benefits include:
- Enhanced eye-tracking and focusing for reading, sports, and fine motor tasks
- Improved eye-hand coordination for activities like board games, lacing, or cutting
- Strengthened neural pathways supporting attention and visual processing
- Increased confidence in tasks requiring precise visual control
These exercises are designed to be engaging yet appropriately challenging, promoting skill development and independence.
Recommendations for Success
Progress at the child’s pace to prevent frustration, ensuring mastery of each exercise before advancing.
- As eye movements are closely tied to head and body coordination, consider pairing this program with CoordiKids Byte: Sensory Modulation to accelerate progress.
- Monitor posture and balance, as these support effective eye control; CoordiKids Byte: Posture and Balance can provide additional support if needed.
- Share your concerns with a CoordiKids therapist for tailored support.
- If progress is slow after four weeks, consult a developmental or behavioral optometrist for specialized guidance.
Parental guidance is essential to ensure proper technique and maintain engagement.
Getting Started
Start with the first exercise, practicing daily for five days, followed by a two-day rest, then repeat for another five days.
Incorporate optional games to keep the experience dynamic and enjoyable. This approach builds robust visual tracking and focusing skills, empowering children to excel in academic, recreational, and daily tasks.
