CoordiKids Byte: Regulation
Overview
CoordiKids Byte: Regulation is a flexible, evidence-based online program of video-recorded exercises designed for children aged 4–12 to develop self-regulation skills, promoting calmness, focus, and readiness for daily activities.
Through engaging stretch-and-breathe exercises, these exercises support children in preparing for school, unwinding after activities, or transitioning to restful sleep.
It is particularly beneficial for children with Sensory Processing Disorder or sensory sensitivities, with parental involvement encouraged to tailor the experience to each child’s needs.
Program Structure
The Regulation program offers a customizable approach to foster self-regulation and focus:
- Exercise Selection: Choose from eight stretch-and-breathe exercises and one deep breathing exercise, selecting those best suited to the child’s needs.
- Timing: Perform exercises in the morning to energize the day, after school to release excess energy, or before bedtime to promote relaxation.
- Repetition: Allow the child to determine the number of exercises and repetitions based on their comfort and goals for the moment.
This adaptable structure empowers children to regulate their emotional and physical states effectively, preparing them for tasks such as schoolwork, physical activities, or sleep.
Objectives and Benefits
The program harnesses targeted movements and breathing techniques to enhance self-regulation and cognitive focus.
Key benefits include:
- Improved ability to achieve a calm and focused state for academic, physical, or restful activities
- Enhanced emotional and sensory regulation, supporting smoother transitions throughout the day
- Increased confidence in managing energy levels and emotional states
These exercises are designed to be accessible and engaging, fostering a sense of control and well-being in children.
Recommendations for Success
To maximize effectiveness, tailor exercise choices to the child’s current mood and needs—e.g., stretches for post-school energy release or deep breathing for bedtime relaxation.
- For children with Sensory Processing Disorder or heightened sensory challenges, consult a CoordiKids therapist for a personalized plan, also called a sensory diet or sensory lifestyle, to incorporate sound therapy principles.
- Parental guidance is recommended to ensure exercises are performed comfortably and to adapt the program to the child’s unique regulation needs.
Getting Started
Select any combination of the eight stretch-and-breathe exercises or the deep breathing exercise, allowing the child to decide the quantity and frequency based on the situation—morning, afternoon, or evening.
